Last Day of the Year

Time to gaze into the coals;
lament the year that flew;
to curl around the hearth,
around a bowl of stew.
Children want to read in bed
but grown-ups won't permit.
Power cuts are every day now,
candles must be lit.
So up to bed the youngsters creep
with book and hidden wick;
under the sheets they turn the page-
what a clever trick.
Time to ask the burning coals
how we got this far.
We think on all the happenings and
we thank our lucky stars.

You have a way with words! Love the images of curling up on the hearth with a bowl of stew and then reading in bed - Happy New Year. Looking forward to reading here in 2010!

Not anymore.
Carbon emissions are taboo.
No burning coal
from any source
or nasty CO2.
If one wants
to read in bed,
they must attach a
solar panel to their head. Pappy

I remember the flashlight under the blankets--and I still wonder how my mother always knew what I was doing just about the time I was well engrossed in my book!
