Going Home

"Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration."
-Charles Dickens

Traditionally, when Mater informs me that she is whitewashing the hob, I gather that somebody of note is about to pay a visit, justifying her furious clean sweep of the house.
Although she happily whitewashed the hob for a guest just recently, she is at it again this weekend for my imminent arrival.
What Mater fails to see, though, is that I will be so preoccupied tucking into homemade sausage, Irish tea and soft, fresh bread, and greeting the familiar feathered chap who will sing out a warm welcome from his cage that I will not even cast a glance at the hob, the floor or indeed any corner, gleaming or otherwise.
Such is the nature of a homecoming: one has seen the proverbial hob at its best and at its worst and one finds that its condition is incidental.

The hob was beautiful when we visited. That evening was absolutely the highlight of our trip. Enjoy your trip.

Texican, I shall do just that ;) Spies indeed. I am going to win the Livingstone Game. I guarantee it.

Beth, that's such a lovely thing to say. I'll be sure to let Mater know :)

I'll be gone for ten days but will do my best to keep posting regularly from Ireland- at last there is high-speed internet at home and it's not as impossible as it once seemed. Progress works, sometimes ;)

How beautiful. She cleans for you. She cares. And she feeds you. She cares. Enjoy!

how lovely to be home with mater for the holidays.... bon voyage and the best to your delightful mother from all of the friends she has that she doesn't know!

since you'll be in ireland and not new england chances are you'll have a green holiday and not a white one!

Have a great visit!

As with so many house-keeping activities, they are more important to the doer than the visitor. And sure as anything, it is the job left undone that gets noticed by somebody. :<) Wishing you a wonderful time.

Truer words were never said. Welcome back to your hob, lovely I'm sure it is.

Hugs to you and Mater.

Ruth, she does. And I did :)

Kimy, not quite green- all the trees are bare but we didn't get any snow, just some frosty nights. I did pass on your lovely comment to Mater about the friends she has.

Pauline, she was very happy with my impending visit! ;) Nothing like anticipation.

Paul, Thanks, I certainly did.

Nan, you are right- it's nice to be able to clean your home and think as you're doing it that someone special is coming over.

Tangobaby, that bit about the hob is beautiful, and I saw it just after I arrived back here. Those hugs are welcomed.

Please look around, explore my writing, leave a crumb:
I welcome comments and thoughts.
